Natural Mouthwash

I have used mouthwash for years and have recently stopped buying it because I am trying to cut out all plastic. As a secondary reason, there are some damning articles about the most popular mouthwash products, so I wanted to find an alternative.

I had been using coconut oil followed by peppermint oil, rinsing with both in turn.

Coconut oil combats bacteria and the peppermint makes my mouth taste nice.

It is effective but not the best mouth feel and you can’t spit it down the sink so it’s not very convenient either.

So I looked up another recipe.

The Simple Mouthwash

  • 1 cup of filtered water

  • 4 teaspoons of baking soda

  • 4 drops of tea tree essential oil

  • 4 drops of peppermint essential oil

Two tablespoons to be taken a day. (Not to be ingested.)

First impressions were it is clean feeling and refreshing, although the soda bicarbonate is salty, so I lowered the baking soda to 1-2 teaspoons and increased the drops of both essential oils to suit.
