Homemade Toothpaste

I have been making my own toothpaste with Cinnamon for a couple of weeks having looked up the many health benefits of this powerful spice. And while there are cautions I have found it to be very effective.

I mix equal parts of Cinnamon with Bicarbonate of Soda and a little water to create thick paste, and then use it twice a day.

The results have been great.

I have noticed improved mouth freshness and a reduction in tooth pain. I have mild tooth pain below several of my teeth with I take to be age related and a symptom of future dental works. However this has been lessened when using my home made toothpaste.

There are of course pros and cons, and official resources state more research is required. Here’s what Healthline says about it.

Benefits of cinnamon for oral health:

  1. Antimicrobial properties: Cinnamon contains compounds like cinnamaldehyde that can fight bacteria and fungi, including those causing cavities and oral infections.

  2. Antibacterial effects: Studies show cinnamon bark oil can be effective against Streptococcus mutans, a common cause of cavities and tooth decay.

  3. Antifungal effects: Cinnamon may help fight Candida strains, which can cause oral thrush.

  4. Anti-inflammatory properties: Cinnamon may help reduce inflammation, potentially beneficial for conditions like gingivitis.

  5. Potential for pain relief: Some studies suggest cinnamon might have pain-relieving properties.

  6. Biofilm prevention: Cinnamon oil may help prevent the formation of biofilm on teeth and dental appliances.

Potential drawbacks and considerations:

  1. Limited evidence for direct application: Most studies used cinnamon extracts or essential oils, not the ground spice commonly found in kitchens.

  2. Possible enamel changes: High exposure to cinnamon extract could potentially alter tooth enamel and color.

  3. Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic or sensitive to cinnamon, leading to swelling, inflammation, or irritation in the mouth and lips.

  4. Lack of fluoride: Unlike commercial toothpastes, cinnamon-based homemade options would lack fluoride, which is important for preventing tooth decay.

  5. Health risks from overconsumption: Consuming too much cassia cinnamon (the most common type) can pose health risks due to its high coumarin content.

  6. Uncertain effectiveness of home remedies: The effectiveness of home remedies like chewing cinnamon sticks or applying ground cinnamon directly to the mouth is not well-established and may pose risks.
